Markus Poschner was born in Munich. Since being awarded the Deutscher Dirigentenpreis in 2004, he has been a regular guest conductor of the world’s leading orchestras. He is especially renowned today for his moving performances and recordings of the works of Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Wagner, Strauss and Mahler, which have been received with great excitement.

After studies in Munich and as assistant to Sir Roger Norrington and Sir Colin Davis, he was appointed Erster Kapellmeister at the Komische Oper Berlin in 2006. From 2007 to 2017 he was Generalmusikdirektor of the Bremen Philharmonic.

In 2015 he became principal conductor of the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana in Lugano. In the 2016/17 season the orchestra undertook its first European tour under Poschner’s directorship, during which it released its DVD recording of the complete symphonies of Brahms. The recording was enthusiastically received, and in 2018 won the prestigious ICMA award.


At the beginning of the 2017/18 season Poschner additionally took up the position of musical director of the Bruckner Orchestra and of the Landestheater Linz. He also enjoys close artistic partnerships with numerous orchestras and opera houses, including the Berlin State Opera, the Frankfurt Opera, the Staatsoper Stuttgart and the Zurich Opera House.

In the spring of 2019 Poschner had a successful debut with the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra conducting Die Walküre for Abu Dhabi Classics.
