Christian Zacharias

Christian Zacharias

Zacharias maintains an active career as an internationally acclaimed concert pianist, with recital and concerto performances around the world. He appears with the world’s leading conductors and conducts the most renowned orchestras; many of his recordings were awarded international prizes.

His conducting career reflects his desire to build long-lasting collaborations with like-minded musical partners. During his time as artistic director and principal conductor of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne he made many critically acclaimed recordings with the orchestra. Of note is his complete cycle of Mozart Piano Concertos, which won the Diapson d'Or, Choc du Monde and ECHO Klassik awards. The most recent recording is of the four Schumann symphonies. Zacharias has been an "Artistic Partner" of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra since the 2009/10 season. He also maintains close ties with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, with whom he was Principal Guest Conductor for many years, and enjoys long-term relationships with orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Hallé Orchestra Manchester, the Het Residentie Orkest Den Haag, the Orchestre National de Lyon, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, the Bamberger Symphoniker and the Gurzenich Orchestra Cologne. Lately he has turned his attention to opera, leading productions of Mozart’s opera seria "La Clemenza di Tito" as well as his opera buffa "Le nozze di Figaro" and Offenbach’s "La Belle Hélène". He has appeared in three films since 1990: "Domenico Scarlatti in Sevilla", "Robert Schumann – der Dichter spricht" (INA, Paris) and "Zwischen Bühne und Künstlerzimmer" (WDR-Arte). Zacharias is the recipient of numerous awards and prizes, including the 2007 Midem Classical Award "Artist of the Year" in Cannes. After being awarded for his contributions to culture in Romania in 2009, the French government honoured him as an "Officier dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres". On the occasion of his 60th birthday, the Alte Oper Frankfurt arranged an "Artist's Portrait" of Christian Zacharias, which presented him as pianist, conductor, chamber musician, and as Lied accompanist. His recital debut in Carnegie Hall in New York in December of 2011 was an important milestone, the first German pianist to do so in 30 years. In 2013/14 concert season Christian Zacharias will be conducting the MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, the Hamburg Philharmoniker, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Northern Sinfonia and the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana. Christian Zacharias has been Professor for Orchestral Performance at the Academy of Music and Drama Gothenburg since 2011.
